We had a great Weekend - it actually felt like spring was in the air. We spent most of the weekend at the beach, I got a room at the Salishan for T's Birthday and we spent plenty of time in the pool and on the beach. All this combined with sunshine and a fancy dinner completed the weekend perfectly. Today we even got some family time in, going to my mom's for a Super Bowl party. Here are just a few photos from the beach - I can't wait for another weekend with this much fun and beautiful weather! I am already ready for summer and it is only February... uh-oh.

Here we are at the end of AUGUST! Yikes. I can't believe how this summer has flown by. Maybe it was the lack of summer that came with it, or the busy days, but for whatever reason, I am not ready for Sophia to be back to school and the end of my sunny days to be in sight. This month has brought a lot of fun and positivity, along with a lot of emotion and stress.

Sophia and I spent a weekend flying to California for a family (bittersweet) memorial. We mourned the loss of Grandparents, while spending some wonderful time with family. We crammed some great quality time in two days for instance:

On the way out, we flew out of a tiny airport in Santa Rosa. Good thing we got there two hours early to sit in the one room airport with the other 20 people. hmmm. Lucky for us, it was the Charles M. Schultz airport, so we had some friends to visit/pose with while waiting in the sunshine!

So, following a weekend in California, we returned to spend 2 days in the hospital. We had a planned procedure, Sophia had a minor surgery and we had to spend the night. She is great, healthy, healing up wonderfully, but it brought a lot of stress for parents! Yikes. Of course, in Sophia's social way, she made a great new friend. We shared a room with another little girl that had the exact same procedure done about an hour prior to Sophia. She was 5 and the two girls had a great time together... considering they were each bound to a gurney.

This is right as we were released to head home - Sophia and Kirsten.

To top it all off, Trav and I celebrated our 1st (married) anniversary yesterday. We hit the beach for breakfast, brought Sophia home and then went back to the beach for shopping, dreaming of lake houses and Thai food dinner. Happy 1st, we made it.

Congratulations to the most beautiful bride EVER, and her husband: Albert and Vanessa - Now they are off to Antigua. I wasn't sure what this looked like, so I had to check out some Google images, I am so jealous. I hope you guys enjoy your honeymoon and many years to follow!

We had an eventful and fun weekend, however, I am so glad I took today off to recuperate! My mom had a beautiful bbq on Friday for the July/August Birthdays. We celebrated about 5 birthdays in one night, it was quite the celebration. Because of all the events this weekend, we got an extra special treat of family in town. My brother John and his wife and daughter came up from Reno. Skylar is about 20 months old and pretty dang cute. She is such a little person, with more attitude than I would think could fit in her little body. But she is SO darn cute! I am horrible about taking pictures, so here is the one I got of her, with my phone:

We also had a beautiful wedding on Saturday - Lydia, my step-sister got married. What a beautiful wedding, at a gorgeous setting. They held a small wedding at the groom's parents house. Lydia looked amazing and was glowing with happiness, which was wonderful to see.

Sunday morning we woke up and began the big birthday for Sophia, she is officially 7 today. Wow, where did that time go. We had a great birthday at the park, it was hot and the fountains were much appreciated by the kiddos! She is growing into quite the young lady. Sometimes I catch her being a kiddo, sometimes she seems more like she's 17, and I am not ready for that! We had 3 girls sleep over last night, plenty of giggling filled the house until I had to crack down and quiet them. Finally, we all slept and there was peace in the house.

Well, we're back. New York was great - so much walking. I was wishing I had worn a pedometer for a couple of the days, it would be interesting to know what kind of mileage I put in. My legs are still aching. This year, we didn't hit nearly as many museums, but we had a blast. I saw Coney Island for the first time and rode the rickety old roller coaster there - yikes! It was quite scary, I wish I could've stayed for this weekend, Coney Island had a mermaid festival yesterday that I would love to see one day. Holy nudity:

We also hit Six Flags in New Jersey this trip. It was a fist-pumping, Jersey Shore, guido-filled day of fun. I fit right in! :) Now, I have never been to a Six Flags. I was expecting 2 good roller coasters and a bunch of other mediocre ones. Nope. Not the case at all. This place is full of fright! We went on at least 10 roller coasters, all of which gave me massive anxiety prior to loading. Never have I felt so excited and stupid at the same time. It was so fun - muggy and hot, but super fun.
One other thing that Travis and I had on our to-do list this year was see the bamboo exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Travis has built this pretty heavy obsession with bamboo in the past few years - it will be taking over our house in about 10 years, I am sure. So, with this love, how lucky for us to land in NY while this exhibit was on display. WOW, and what a job. These guys just sit around tying bamboo together, listening to music all day. They have created this structure that is crazy. Huge. And, it has a complete walkway that you can take a tour and walk through.

As the end of the school year wraps up, so does ballet for the season. Sophia's ballet class is putting on their final performance this weekend - yes, ALL weekend. She has ballet coming out her ears, from Wednesday to Sunday. This year, they are performing Giselle. Travis and I went and watched last night, she was wonderful. It never gets easier, I try to not cry, and I am SO filled with pride. Wow, amazing what that girl does to me! Well, here are a couple of photos that we took on Thursday during dress rehearsal, not on stage, but in her costume.

I didn't realize until now, she is quite tall, wow, she is growing fast!

In other news, I had to make some posters for a literacy project that I participate in and for one of them, my family starred. Here's the final look! Travis hates it, but look how happy Sophia is, and Nico is pretty cute too!

Life - so far 2010.

Well, so far, 2010 has been rough. I have mentally decided, I am getting OUT of this funk, sunshine or no sunshine! With the loss of both Grandfathers and one Grandmother since last September, I have definitely been falling, physically and mentally. I have been sick now for about 6 weeks straight - 3 body infections, pinkeye and some crazy sore throat that just won't quit. I went to the Dr for the sore throat and she called the next day to ask if I wanted anti-depressants... ummm, that's weird! Do those help with sore throats? haha, anyway, um no thanks. I think the best thing I can do and the thing my body REALLY needs is for me to chill it out. Find some time for me, relax. Lose the stress and I think I will lose the sick. Most of the stressful situations have passed, we have survived all of them, my grieving has slowed and am finally at the point where I have taken responsibility and decided, if something needs changed, change it. The only thing left is Sophia's surgery, August 16th. I am nervous, but I know the idea of not having it done is SO much worse than just sucking it up and getting it done. Once that is over, no more excuses, I am getting out of this funk once and for all. In the meantime: naps, shrink, positive thoughts.

Oh, and vacation to New York: countdown is 2 weeks. YIPEE!

I will start with design! I found an etsy shop yesterday that I am definitely going to support (when I can afford to, of course). This girl makes the most flattering and simple tops, they are reasonably priced too! Here is a link to crystalindumentaria's etsy site.

Makes me want to buy new clothes and sew and get creative and stuff. Yep, all that from one Etsy shop. Amazing.

On another note, Mother's Day was spectacular. I started the day with pure laziness (my favorite thing). I slept in and then browsed the internet with a cup of my Keurig coffee in hand, with the house to myself. You just can't beat that. We later headed to my mom's to help her with her garden as her gift. We laughed and decided that, if you raise 5 kids, there is no guilt in having them come over and shovel hot, stinky compost (okay, be honest, it's shit) from the front to the back yard. And we did it, and we loved it. Happy Mother's Day, mama. We then planted the garden for her and really got her off to a good start! It was great time spent with my sister, brothers, significant others, nieces, nephews and folks. And a beautiful, sunny day to top it all off!

I feel blessed to have the family that I have. This has by far been some of the hardest couple of months I have ever had to endure. With health issues, life stress and the passing of my beloved Grandma, I think I have definitely been given the test of life. I have to give one big thank you to my daughter, husband, family and friends for truly being there through the thick and thin. I am blessed.

I lost a legend this week. My Grandma had a sudden stroke and was gone the next morning. Now, lucky for me, I was able to spend the last 29 years knowing my Grandma and Grandpa (who also passed earlier this year). I guess you can never really be ready to lose someone until they are gone, and then you grieve them and never forget how they impacted your life.
There was quite a difference in the way they went, Grandpa had been talking about it for years. Every time I would see him and tell him goodbye, his response was something along the lines of, "I won't be around 'til then." He's had one foot out the door of life for at least five years. But, WOW, did it hurt when it really happened.

And just when she started to really break out and start living without him, Grandma went too. Grandma was different. She had chosen to live life, to the fullest, every day. She was busy, never bored. She engaged her mind and body all the time, every day. She always had a crossword and a new painting that she was working on and was always up for a game of Scrabble. There was always fresh biscotti in the cookie jar and ice cream in the freezer, just in case the kids came by. Never missed a Birthday or a holiday. She was healthy, strong and young at mind and heart. And then, gone. Just that quick.
So, to cope, I look at past pictures. I cherish the treasures that I got to bring home and I continue to tell myself how fortunate I was to have them for the first 29 years of my life, and how fortunate Sophia was to have them for 6 of hers. Not everyone gets a chance to share a song with their Grandpa-Great and a sundae with their Grandma-Great and I just keep telling her that.

I just hope they know the legacy they left behind - They were loved so much, by so many.

You will be missed, Grams and Gramps.

So, you're asking, "what's happenin' lately?" Well, we have been a little busy, to be honest. Sophia keeps me going... No rest for the weary! Currently, she is doing ballet one night a week and soccer at least 3 nights a week. She wants to try out for a talent show at school and also just finished taking native dance classes for a friend's senior project. I had a video, all ready to post but, when I try to email it to myself, it is taking FOREVER, so unfortunately, I have nothing to show.

They did great, it was by far one of the best senior project productions I have ever seen! Great job to Halona, I hope she gets a wonderful grade for this.

On my end, just working full time is enough to keep me busy. I am pretty much completely exhausted after spending 5 hours with a classroom of 3 year olds. I really have been loving my sleep lately. Not sure if that's a good thing or not ~ regardless, I enjoy it! I have also been spending a lot of energy, and that's about all, on trying to figure out how to go about doing some graphic design work. I miss it so bad, yet am so torn on how to get into it. I would love a full-time graphic design job with great hours! HA, however, I don't want to commute. This seems impossible with my situation. My other option would be to do freelance/contract work. I am NOT business saavy, so I just don't even know where to start. I have done some networking, but I need help with the paperwork/contracts/marketing. SO, for any of you that just absolutely LOVE this stuff and can help me. Please, by all means, call. I would love to pick some brains on breaking into the solo world and being successful at it.
Today, I have high hopes to put my garden in, or at least begin the process (til the dirt)

That's what I like to call fertile-mertile! Holy cow, I sure hope we get our garden boxes ready soon, looks like we will be transplanting sooner than we thought! Oh, and by the way, that is like a 70/72 success rate right there! Wow!

Apparently, NOT having a design job is my inspiration for doing design. I miss it so bad lately, that I spend so much time looking and loving design. I have begun trying to get a website for myself done again, I am stuck, but trying to get past it and will hopefully seek out help before I give up. We'll see.. . . .

Anyway, my other focus area in my art degree is printmaking. OH, I love printmaking. I talk about it, think about it, but NEVER do I actually do it. Why, you ask?? I don't know. It is challenging. So, today, I sat down and decided to do a little sketch (the beginning of a possible print idea...) I really love red coral, I love it in it's raw, organic form. I love it's imperfect shapes. I love it's saturated red color. SO, I did research and sketched a little sketch:

tada. I think it would make a cute little print on a postcard sized paper. Off-white paper, of course. Well, that's all for now. :)

When I look at this, I think, really, if you think you can do it yourself, BY ALL MEANS, do so.

I really look forward to getting back into graphic design, I really miss it.... However, I don't look forward to working with unappreciative clients. Oh well, I guess every job has it's gives and takes!

I started my plants for the garden already! We got 72 pods planted with vegetable seeds, ready to warm up in the dining room, so they are nice and hardy for the outdoor transplant around April/May. It is WAY early, but I get SO excited! And anyway, in the past I have always thought that I was too late. It starts out that I think it's right on time, but my veggies come late in the year and then I have to stress out about whether or not they will have enough sun to turn, you know. Well, here is stage one... Oh, and you can see, I had my helper with me as well, she planted half the pods and helped make the little flag labels (her idea!) Cute!

It was sure great to see the sun today - I realize that it gives me a whole new outlook on my day, better mood, more motivation. Amazing. Today was great, the sun was shining, I even hit the gym after work (pointless, considering I finished the night with a cheeseburger and tater tots, YUM), point is, I went. What makes me sad is that I know it's just a tease, see, I want the sun to STAY! I see you coming rain, and I don't like it one bit.

well, for now, I am just going to enjoy a couple of sunny days! Enjoy yours as well.

So, here I am, now a preschool teacher. I enjoy my job, and the convenience, wow! I work minutes from my house and am off of work by 3 almost every day. I can't beat that. However, with all of this, I have been dreaming, obsessing even, over the graphic design part of me that has become inactive. I have been pouring through design blogs constantly, and dreaming of screenprinting as well. Needless to say, in my search today, I found something that I just can't pass up, it is worth sharing, I think.

I saw this poster, made by the birds and the beasts, on a blog that I also just found today, The Scoop. What a great poster, well written and oh so true.

I wonder if I will have the motivation to begin doing printing and design as a hobby now, so I can really enjoy it, since I realize how much I miss it when it is gone... I hope so.

I LOVE Christmas. I love the family get togethers, the food. OKAY, I like the gifts too!

Today we had Christmas #1 at my dad's. How special to get to share a Christmas with my Grandma. We didn't grow up getting that, because she was always in California. I imagine it was slightly harder than most, as this was our first Christmas without Grandpa. Both Grandpa's for that matter. Even with that in mind, I am so grateful for the family I was given. I truly think they are the best. All of them. We have a great time together.

Tomorrow will be Christmases #2 and #3. And technically, it will only be Christmas Eve. I can't wait to wake up on Christmas day and have no plans. We will be home in jammies playing with new toys if anyone needs us! :)

YAY -- well, I just celebrated my birthday weekend, technically, I am not older until tomorrow, but the spoiling began this weekend. I am a lucky girl!

For the weekend, we started by getting out of town. We went up to Washington and stayed with some very dear friends. Thank you to Adam, Mandi, Cooper and Cloey for sharing your beautiful house with us, it is always so comfortable and pleasant. The boys sent us on a little shopping spree on Saturday, Travis sent me to buy myself some gifts, while they watched the kiddos for the day. That is the best gift ever because usually, there is always guilt that comes with spoiling myself. This time I shed all guilt and got myself some new shoes and clothes. Downtown Portland shopping is hard to beat! When we were done, we went back to the house, sent the kids to Grammy's house and went to dinner! We ate at:

We lounged around, watched movies, ate popcorn and cookies for breakfast. It was great. On our way home, we decided to stop and eat at cascade station, which then led us to Marshall's, Ross, and a successful trip to Ikea. Afterwards, we headed to Abby's Pizza to pick up dinner to go and stopped and shared it with Travis' mom. It was a great finale to a great weekend.

Yeah, I feel pretty lucky.

Here we are again, at another weekend! YAY. Seems like we have been laying low lately, we used to go, go, go, but lately, we have spent some days home. It is a nice change. This weekend here is the agenda:

Last night: dinner with friends. I made salt dough ornaments and the girls (Sophia and her friend) painted them. Can't wait to tie ribbons on them and finalize them, hope to get some photos soon as well.

Today: going to a weaving (baskets) workshop, I am taking Sophia and hopefully she can get that under her belt, it is a hard concept, but part of her heritage and history, so important! We may only be there for about an hour, but should be a good social and crafty time.
Later, we will head to Willamina for the COLD and short, kind of tacky, light parade & hot cocoa. Funny thing is that we go every year, even though it is a bunch of monster trucks and log trucks with just a few lights -- only lasts about 10 minutes. It's fun.

Tomorrow: nothing. So far, I got nothing. WHAT am I going to do tomorrow???

I LOVE winter weekends with no plans :)

Thanksgiving -

Oh, I love Thanksgiving. This year, I am thankful for the 4 1/2 day weekend that comes with it. I am thankful for a full-time job with benefits AND pays well. Finally, being able to pay the bills again. Less stress. ahhh.

I am also thankful for so many other things:

Relationships.
family. moms & dads. siblings. Nieces & Nephews. in-laws. friends.
Travis.
SOPHIA - man I love her.
Grandparents - the ones that went on this year and the ones still here with us.

Food.
Thanksgiving dinner is so good. And so much better the next day! mmmmm.
Thank you Sandy for bringing that pumpkin cheesecake, yum. (And thank you for bringing it home with you also, I would've eaten the whole thing and would weigh 20 lbs more...)

I woke up and began cleaning. Stripped the beds, washed the sheets, scrubbed the toilet, tub, sink. Swept, mopped (well, Travis mopped), dusted. The dishwasher was ran and the washing machine and dryer have been going strong for hours. It's one of those things that, I will tell you I hate to clean house but, there is something slightly therapeutic about it all. In the end, I am never more cozy than in my warm, clean house with candles burning and some music in the background. That may be one of my most happy places. I think all the hard work adds to that pleasure.

That is how I have spent the day, this is my reflection, and it's only 2pm. We still have a dinner date at friend's later.

I do love Sundays. :)

I am so sorry we had to end our time together. I think you are beautiful and fruitful and warm and kind, but I had to go. It is definitely not you, it's me. I will return to you again one day, and I will always love you, but for now, our time is over. I have captured some of our memories together in photos and I will always cherish them. Well, I am sure you are all wondering how is the new job? I love it so far! It is GREAT! I work from 7-3. Until 1:00 it is spent with about 7 cute 3 year-olds.... crazy, but SO much fun. At 1:00, I get office time. Curriculum, meetings, emails, etc. Best of both worlds. Right when I need to break away, I get to go to my little office and have some alone time. Since I am done at 3:00, I have at least 45 minutes...best part... ALL TO MYSELF! With NO responsibility, child, NOTHING. That is just unheard of. Today I got 30 minutes of cardio in, felt good. (well, bad, but good. You know).

I think this is going to be the perfect balance for me. I am lucky because with kid curriculum, I will get to use my creative side. Since I am in an immersion classroom, I will be able to make and recreate books in a new language, a.k.a. use my graphic design degree/skills. However, what I missed at the Lottery, was the kids. This way, I will still get to work with kids and use my creative side. I am excited.

Tomorrow, we head to the pumpkin patch - in the rain. On Friday, I had the day off but went to the Pumpkin patch with Travis and Sophia (and the K-5 Program, and Travis's work)... It was beautiful and sunny.... Not sure that will be the case tomorrow! Here are some pics from the first trip to the patch.

Relationships

Well, I suppose that the relationship between my blog and I has been neglected. I didn't MEAN for it to happen. It just did. I am sorry. I will try once again to nurture this and bring it back, but, I just can't promise and commit the way I should. Sorry. It's not you, it's me.

So, what's new with me, anyway? I have had an 'active' month to say the least.

For starters, as my plane landed in California on the 21st of September, I also received a call from my dad, letting me know my grandfather had peacefully slipped away. He passed into the next phase of being. I have never experienced this before, up until this point, I have had ALL of my grandparents, alive. Although, we all knew it was coming, the pain was excruciating, yet, at the same time it was a slight release. Not because we wanted to see him go, but he was tired of fighting and was ready to go. I choose to believe he is now in a better place and he was ready to go there. With the loss of one Grandfather, it has also been brought to my attention that another is fading, as well as a Grandmother. I can already tell, this won't get easier.

On another level, however, there has definitely been some positive happenings during this time. Two days after receiving notice of my Grandfather, I received notice of a new job. I was offered a position at the Tribe that not only, pays double my annual salary, but is in the language classroom. This will allow me to continue fluency in Sophia's native language and enhance her fluency at the same time. She will not lose it after all -- she spent three years in immersion classrooms learning her language, the program however, ends after kindergarten. I will be the wheel that keeps turning for that, I'm excited for this.

Speaking of Sophia, she is doing wonderfully in the first grade, she is still excelling at reading and pushing forward in her other subjects. She is also playing soccer, which is pretty demanding, 2 practices and 2 games a week, generally. Due to this, she has dropped ballet, but may restart that in January (I hope so!!).

Well, Sophia is truly a 1st grader! I dropped her off this morning and we saw lots of friends and the drop off was easy. I think she has had some anxiety up until this morning, finally, there was some excitement! I think it is going to be a great year. She has a wonderful teacher and lots of great friends in her class. One more year, I can't believe it.

Well, I feel like this is a milestone week, I should definitely post!! This weekend, Saturday, to be exact, is the day we tie the knot! We have been busily working, worrying and trying to remain extremely calm, all at the same time. For not having a "wedding", I sure feel like we have been planning one! So, as of now, the house is ready on the outside.... not even close on the inside, it needs one good day of cleaning. I think that will wait until Friday, I have learned that a clean house only lasts about 24 hours around here, I don't want to do it twice..

Food is taken care of, The Reverend Alyssa Gasca is ready to marry us in the yard (I am SO excited about this fact!), beer keg: ordered. Port a potty: ordered. Wine:handled. I think officially, there are about 3 things that I have left to take care of... ugh. wow.

I continue to tell myself this, for all of you stressed party planners: No matter what, the only person that will notice anything missing, is you. If people don't see it, they won't even think about it. SO, with that said, no worries. I am calm as a freakin' crazy cucumber!!! :)

The Garden.

Well... The garden is doing pretty well this year. We ate 1 cherry tomato, a zucchini, some green beans and green onions out of it so far. That is pretty good! We have an OVER-abundance of jungle-like tomato plants, but none of them seem to want to turn red.... hmmm. Don't know what to do about that. I seem to have this problem every year. Is it not enough sun for a long period of time?? I don't know what the deal with them is. Well, here are some photos of my fruits (and vegetables) of labor:

Well, awhile back, like, in JUNE (yes, I am that much of a slacker) we had some wonderful visitors. As usual, I did not take enough photos, but got one or two pretty cute ones. My cousins, Maya and Dylan, and their mates, Elizabeth and Mike came up on a road trip. We enjoyed them SO SO much and are hoping to see them all again in a couple of weeks. . . It really makes me wish we could live closer to them. They are so much fun. As I said, I didn't get too many photos, but I did love this one of Maya with my girls, Nico and Sophia.

Unfortunately, later on that night, the kids were bad and got put in the cage that we keep in our living room.... :(

JUST KIDDING -- that is Nico's crate and the kids being dorks. Imagine that! These two are something else when they get together.

Some more recent news is.......... drumroll please.................... we have arrived home from a week on the canoe journey. And I have a couple of pics. From day one. Then I never took another photo, the whole time. :) Yes, that's how I work!

Above is a photo of the beach before our canoe came into shore on the first day, as this beach filled up with these hand-dug canoes, it was a pretty amazing site to see.

OF COURSE, should've known. It is Sophia, all smiles!
We had a great time. I paddled about a day and a half, a total of maybe 17-18 miles. Sounds like a lot to me, but really, it is nothing compared to what most people paddle on this journey. It is a lot of work, but, every year I return and can't wait for the next year. It is really a great experience, hard work, but tons of fun.

In other news, my garden is out of control -- it is a pure jungle. I have about 7 tomato plants that are taking over, yet no red tomatoes. I ate my first pole beans today, right off of the plant. They were delicious. And, my green onions are HUGE. Hope to get pictures up soon.

Still job searching, but definitely not complaining.

Summer is so much more fun outside, than on the computer!

Journey 2009

Well, here goes. It is that time of year again, we are heading out on the Canoe Journey 2009. Usually, I only get to attend a portion, while Sophia and Travis are there for the duration. This year, since I am unemployed, and it is a shorter distance than it has been in the past, I will be there for most of it -- a week. We will head out on Sunday and spend the week paddling, singing and camping, we will be on our way to Suquamish, WA. Sounds greuling, and don't get me wrong, it is. Yet it is extremely exciting, and one of the most amazing things a person could participate in. This is the largest youth drug and alcohol prevention event on the west coast. It is extremely spiritual and touching, like nothing I have ever seen before.

This particular video was taken by one of our skippers -- those are just about all teenagers pulling these canoes.

I have to say, this is one event that makes me wish I had tighter roots in my culture. I see these hundreds, maybe thousands, of people, all with this cultural tie. All of these people, working so hard to go back to their roots, and I swell with pride when I watch my daughter participate. She knows her tribes songs, dances, language. As a 5 year old, to have all of that culture handed to you -- wow. I am 28, I have no songs, dances, or language. I am lucky that I can watch my daughter absorb all of this and someday, she will be rich from her culture and pride. I love that.

another Sunday, come and gone!

Wow, what a wierd weekend. Middle of July and we are surrounded by pouring rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning storms. Who would've thought we would spend one day in the pool and the next day in the rain! Crazy Oregon weather. So, what did this weekend bring? New magnets, new dishwasher, and a new book binding technique. Pretty exciting, I think!

New on my Etsy site are these magnets, they are so much more beautiful in person, but crappy pictures do no justice!

I made one WONDERFUL find this weekend. Long story short, my dishwasher shorted out about 6 months ago and I have not been able to bring myself to buy a new one -- I didn't know if it would even work after all. SO, as I was driving through town (in Travis's truck, no less), I passed a yard sale. As I glanced to the side, I see a shiny, glowing, beautiful, white dishwasher!!!
I jump out of the truck, give it a look over, and the price..... $30. So, I gave it a what the heck and they threw a sold sticker on it. After a busy weekend and three trips to the hardware store, Travis pulled through today, and installed that baby. Officially, it works. It is wonderful. Dishwasher is in effect.

I also learned a new book binding stitch today: the coptic stitch. I love it... soon to be in the Etsy shop: coptic bound books. I love learning new things!!

Well, here is day one, of week one, of unemployment. So far -- pretty productive! I have had some serious inner soul searching: Starting with a breakdown, and now realizing I now have the opportunity to evaluate my situation and decide what direction should I go in. Sounds glamorous, but it is so hard, in reality, to accept. For now. I am working on making this an opportunity and trying to see it as a time to really figure out what it is that I should (or better yet, WANT) to do. At this point, I LOVE graphic design and would love to continue on that path, design, printmaking, screenprinting, sewing: I think I really need to take time to do these things that I love. It makes me happy and pleasant. It releases the creative juices. The challenge is finding a way to earn money from it so I can continue to help support my family, and ensure that Travis does not take all the financial stress, my part to keep him happy as well. Beyond that, I want to work part-time. I think the ultimate situation would be to work 1/2 time in education, with kids, and the other half at home creatively. These are the things that I enjoy, and truly can't decide between.
Moving on, I am sure you are saying "Productive day, yeah right, what have you done today??" Well, I was up at 6:45, got a cup of coffee and spent about 15 minutes just holding my girl. THAT is what I needed today. Once she was ready for school, we were off, and she was at school and I was at the gym. excercised. Headed to the post office to pay bills, came home, showered, did the dishes. And here I am: 10:13 am and ready to start trying to build myself a website. Not too shabby. However, as I said, this is day one, we will see what day two brings! Ciao!

So far, so good. I made my first official sale via etsy.com the other day and it felt good. It was also surprisingly motivating! I was thinking 'Uh oh, I just sold half my inventory!'. So, with that, I am going to stock that baby to the gills. Keep checking back. I am trying to keep things fresh and new there, so there is constantly something to look forward to! I know I am a couple days behind on the Father's Day post, but I don't feel as though I want to let it pass without recognizing it. I was lucky enough to get to celebrate with 4, YES 4, great dads. First of all, Travis
-- best dad ever. Sophia and I got him a hammock and we spent the day in the yard doing yardwork and planting new bamboo (his other baby).

I was also lucky enough to run into my dad on that special day. He is great -- thanks to him for not only being an awesome dad, but also, a WONDERFUL Grandpa. So amazing to watch him and Sophia together, they make quite the pair, and share a hilarious sense of humor.

Now for dad #3, Tim has been my other wonderful dad and Grandpa for Sophia, thanks to him for also being so wonderful and accepting in ALL that I do. So supportive and always kind.

Last dad of the post, dad #4, Brother John. My brother was lucky enough to celebrate his first ever father's day. What a lucky guy, he somehow got one of the CUTEST baby girls ever! He is a great dad and I am so proud of him..... Now if only I could get him to move a liiiittttle bit closer so I could see his lovely family more often...
That is only 4 of the great dad's I know and admire. You guys are all so special in my life. With that said, I also must recognize the other side, Happy Father's Day to ALL the dad's, including Uncle Toby, Uncle Ariah, Grandpa Bob -- You guys are all wonderful!

I just came to a realization.

All these people blog about what they love. What they do. How they relax, kill time, pass the days. I just realized, when I am stressed. When I need a moment of downtime. What do I do? I read their blogs, about what they do. Then I daydream, just a little bit, that I am living that life for just a moment -- but rather than completely living that life, I am only enjoying that lifestyle. I still have my home, family and friends. I just enjoy doing things that, maybe, I have never even done. Or better yet, doing things that I want to do, but can't find the time, and when I do have the time..... I just sit and read about it!

So, thank you to all my daily blogs -- thank you for updating. Thank you for just posting something that, maybe you think nobody reads. But, I do. And I love it. It makes me smile.

We decided to take a last minute out-of-town vacation. We headed up to stay with some friends in WA and were so glad that we did. We had a blast. Included in our weekend getaway, was:

On our end, we had a great Mother's day. I was surprised at work by my love and our daughter, with flowers in hand. We went to lunch and it was great. On Mother's day we started the day at my mom's for brunch and ended at Travis's brothers for BBQ. We had great company and great conversation. We went to the park and I realized it had been YEARS since I have played catch. I loved it. Here is a picture of Sophia and her cousin Logan -- that's my girl, riding the pegs!

So, I have been trying to learn to relax, just a little bit. I am learning to live the life of an 8-5er and have my evenings to do whatever I want. Why is that so hard? It is SO-O-o-o0o hard for me to just get off work, come home, and let myself relax. There are always a million things I should be doing, that I never get done, but nonetheless, spend the evening doing something, never nothing. One thing I have noticed in the midst of all of this is that I miss books. Somehow, I let all of my magazine subscriptions run out (and somehow, I have not been totally missing them....strange), but I have been missing books. (I wonder if it has anything to do with the amount of hours I spend in front of a computer everyday....hmmm)

Let me know if you have any recommendations. I don't even know where to start... Tonight would be a great night to cuddle up and read a book.

So, one day while browsing blogs, I came across another obsession. I don't know what it is, but every once in awhile, I become absolutely obsessed with someone who I have never met, but, there is something about their blog (that sounds so nerdy.) that just sucks me in. It is some sort of surreal dream life of mine. I think they are an interesting person and seem to find their personality magnetic. I enjoy peering into their life and interests, which must be similar to mine. The most recent find of this sort, is a fellow Oregonian. Hulaseventy is a blogger that I came across via her husbands site. Ward is, from what I understand, a pretty accomplished illustrator in the PDX area. Andrea, AKA hulaseventy, however has this beautiful way with words. She also takes amazing vintage-y polaroid photos and has some sort of kick-ass personality that I enjoy "reading". vacation - weekends - why can't it always be?

Well, I have finally moved some photos from the camera to the computer! Wow, that is progress. Last week we had a great vacation, we headed out on the annual Sunriver vacation. we were busy pretty much the whole time -- which is NOT my definition of a vacation -- but it was so much fun, I didn't even notice. we spent time sledding, biking, rock climbing, snowboarding, swimming, hot-tubbing and just about everything else that is there to do. As you can see, there were kid monkeys and a man-monkey (I think he is the OLDEST sibling.?.) We finally got to meet the newest member of the family, Little miss Skylar -- and Sophia got a chance to hold her while she was enjoying herself -- this made Sophia's vacation! We got to spend lots of great time with the fam, and some great time together. I really enjoyed spending time with my nieces and nephew, I don't see them enough! Yesterday, Sophia and I had a great day. Every once in awhile, it has to be all about her, well, most days are, but this one REALLY was. We had to get some new earrings for her ears, because she has officially reached the point where she can change them. Unfortunately, the ones she picked out must be for baby ears, they are not quite long enough - so we are back to the rubies, which is fine with me, I like them! After picking out new earrings, we went to Grandma's house, and cousin Lucia and Grandma went with us to Sophia's first horseback riding lesson. She was amazing, like she had been doing it forever. She looked great with the horse, and the horse was great with her. I was so proud! CowGIRL up! ha ha ha

After riding, we got a couple great photos of the girls -- these cousins are best buds!

This has been the photo on my desktop for the last couple of days. I have always liked it, but as I see it every day, I am loving it more and more. I think the fuzziness of the image really makes it a beautiful photo. I like to change my desktop frequently -- keep it fresh -- but today, I went to change it and got a little sad... I guess the ballerinas shall stay, I am not ready to part with them. By the way, that is most definitely Sophia front and center!

was browsing the wonderful wide world we like to call web, and I came across some design inspiration... First was this designer out of Seattle. He has some great stuff, here is a link to his blog. Here is a link to his website. The one thing that really caught my eye was this simple logo/postcard:
Seems as though wood grain (even faux) is really becoming a trend right now.

Another thing I saw this week, (and I can't remember where....sorry) was this BEAUTIFULLY stitched reserved sign. I believe this was used at a wedding of sorts and I think it is perfect.
There is something in stitching that I find to be so beautiful. It is definitely one of my most favorite things.

So, I have been diligently going to my 8-5 (which is really a 7-6, with a commute!), and unfortunately, by the time I get home... this blog and any other outside projects are the last thing on my mind. Today though, you are all lucky! I have had a MOTIVATED day, to say the least.

Thank you for Sandy and Deb for taking me to the gym after work -- I needed that great work-out and feel like a million bucks since I got home. After the gym, I came home and rather than sitting on the couch and relaxing -- which I LOVE to do -- I chose to NOT turn the TV on. I have now possibly committed to spending every Wednesday this way. Wow, what a difference. I did the dishes (yuck). Got Sophia and myself cleaned up in the tub. Had a little snack with Sophia and snuggled, then off to bed.

Now we get to business. I spent about an hour and a half actually doing design work OUTSIDE of work. It was fun. I have been working on some logo/letterhead for Alyssa and here is a sneak peek (Nothing is finalized, just a preview):

Well, I just thought I better post since it has been awhile. Unfortunately, with the puppy and the child and the full time job, the blog gets stuck on the back burner quite frequently! I'm sure you all understand!

I have not been making my usual blogging rounds as often as I once did, so occasionally, I spend some time and look through all the blogs I love so much. I start with the family and friends, (which I check daily..) then if time allows, I wander into some others. There is a weird fascination that I have with these bloggers... Mainly design blogs, there is an entire online, design blog community. They are all SUPER talented and have jobs AND seem to post on their blogs daily, and when I visit them, I am reminded of why I love design. It is something I can't really explain, but sometimes, I secretly want to live their lives (with Travis and Sophia, of course). Here are just a couple of the TOP picks:

I am in love with her, and not only does she fall into the category mentioned above, but she just had a beautiful wedding and a super long honeymoon.... in Australia. Jealous. I secretly think we are best friends... but she doesn't know me, creepy. sorry.

How About Orange

I am pretty sure I have mentioned this blog before, she is possibly one of the better known bloggers and great designer as well.

For now, I will leave it at that, but there happens to be an entire list and I will try to get them all on here at some point-- maybe as their own post.

Another thing I have fallen in love with lately is a product called envirotex. I am pretty sure this name is contradictory, because I think it has nothing good to do with the enviro-ment. BUT, I love it. It is an epoxy that you just pour on to something and it seals it up. (Think coasters, magnets, plaques) So, I have decided to experiment with it quite a bit and I have been making sets of magnets. Here are the latest sets... I haven't attached the magnets yet, but just so you get the idea:

I am hoping to get crazy with this stuff and make some jewelry pendants, beads, bracelets, earrings, photo holders, etc, etc, etc and THAT will be the beginning of Etsy. It's all just a matter of time (and that, I lack). But I have a couple of creative goals this year and the Etsy shop is definitely one of them.

Beyond the creative and design-y world, all else is good. Nico is getting big and she is very sweet. I can't believe how quick she is growing, I think she has almost doubled in size. Sophia is also growing so fast. She is an amazing reader, she can sound out just about anything you put in front of her, in English and Chinuk. I am SO proud of her, I called her teacher the other day to thank her for all she has done this year -- guess what -- I got all choked up and started to cry, WHO WOULDA THOUGHT! I am such a sissy. Oh well, there could be worse things.

Ha ha, yeah right! I know what you were all thinking-- you're crazy! So truth be told, we do have a small little friend that joined our household lately... She is cute, 6 weeks old, smart, and a lot of freakin' work. We stay up late, we wake up in the middle of the night, we have to keep our eye on her at ALL times. But, she is pretty fun so far, we are enjoying her. Here she is, welcome Nico:

We like her. The cat doesn't LOVE her, and we are starting to wonder if the cat is actually allergic to her... Does that even happen? The cat has been sneezing an awful lot since Nico came into the picture.

We spent the weekend at the coast with Mandy, Tyson and the boys, we had a great time. We rented a big two level room at the Embarcadero and just relaxed! We crabbed and clammed and ate and played and it was great. It is funny that when you live by the coast for your whole life, you forget to appreciate it... I was reminded this weekend how beautiful it is and how much I love to go there. Here Sophia and Moses are horsing around, cuties:

Travis and I are usually guilty of being party poopers, but this year we went for the babysitter and a party. We had a blast ending up with close friends and family at our house having good food, talk and of course, a Wii bowling tournament. Good times.

Well, here we go. I have been having computer/internet issues, so this is the photo that I was able to put on here. This is our snowman we built. Sophia had a great time in all the snow, now we are hoping to avoid a big flood. The water has begun, our road is closed today due to the river that runs across it, however, I powered through and got to work anyway!! Hope I can get home.

I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and a very Happy New Year! We sure did, Somebody is spoiled and here is a picture of her. :)

Well, we had a little bit of snow this season...Only about 2 feet at my house! I missed quite a bit of work, was forced to stay in for quite some time (which is not said in happiness or sadness, just awkward!). I will post photos at some point, BUT I have excuses as to why I haven't been blogging and need help from all of you first:

#1: My little Macbook died, hard drive crashed and I have lost EVERYTHING. This includes all the links to my favorite blogs (Sandy, Molly, etc...) I need the links!! I love checking in and now I can't. wah.

#2: We have not had the internet for over a week -- which means no blogging...I might be doing this from work...maybe.

#3: I got a new camera and have not gotten a chance to install the new software, once that all goes down, I will post new photos.

These are my excuses... :) Happy winter!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, we sure did. I think the winning gift this year was a Wii from Travis's mom, it has been quite a hit at our house, tons of fun. Sophia is an amazing bowler, by the way! :)

Well, I decided to start this post out with a shout out to Heather. A fellow graphic designer that I work with. She opened an Etsy shop! Good job Heather, way to fulfill your goals and keep yourself challenged...Inspiring! Here is a link to her shop! While I was checking her Etsy shop out, I browsed further on, delving into my paper/stationery obsession and found another great Etsy shop, paperheartdesign. Cute stuff. Just thought I'd throw those out there, support the indies.

I am finding all the people who live my dreams online. At first that sounds....I don't know, depressing. BUT, little do you know, it is actually VERY exciting. The reason for this is that it gives me faith and confidence that someday, I, TOO, may have my own stationery design business. Soon I will open an Etsy shop and move forward from there! Turkey day

Well, it is now over and we are moving on to discussion of the next holiday, MY BIRTHDAY! Oh, and Christmas.

We had a great Thanksgiving, Some of my family and some of Travis's family all got together at our house and had a feast! It was just nice to have everyone together that could make it and not even have to leave the house. It was great, couldn't ask for more. Usually I am horrible about taking pictures, but on Thanksgiving, I made myself (and everyone else) do it, and I am glad I did. I got some great ones! Here are a few:

On another note, I designed my Christmas cards, but haven't printed them OR sent them out. So, I just hope for all of you out there looking forward to it, that you get it BEFORE Christmas. You know how I am though, no promises!

It's been a long time. So sorry. I am not sure what the reason for that is, but I would assume it has to do with time, stress, weather, priorities, business....you know, that's just a few guesses...

I am pretty sure nothing has changed from before, but the days are shorter and I am just a sissy when winter comes along. Okay, I am done with the complaints.

Just for all of you who have been waiting, here is a photo of my baby niece...I just want to meet her, she is beautiful. Big brother John and Petra, you guys did good!

Well, today was my first ever paper show. It was great! West Coast Paper had a show at the Lawrence Gallery, It was full of designers, paper reps and great art! I came home with two bags full of paper samples, posters, and all sorts of promotional pieces from different paper companies. They really make some great marketing items. Here are a few great finds I came across today...

First, at a blog I like to check now and again, the style files there was a feature about what is called a 'riad'. It is decorated SO beautifully, I think this decor would look so nice in our rustic house. Here are my favorite shots from her blog, she has many more posted, if you'd like to see more!

Another great site that I was referred to today is a great place to look for inspiration if you like to make cards. tiny prints has some great cards for all occasions. I tried to post a sampling of their cards, but my patience ran out when the photo wouldn't load.... sorry.

Tomorrow Sophia and I are going on a field trip to the farm and the pumpkin patch with her school, and finishing the day by moving my Grandparents here from California. We will now be able to see them once a week, instead of once a year. Can't wait for tomorrow. Will post pictures soon...

Well, I have officially begun self-motivating, doing things for MY benefit, not someone else's. I have to be honest, it feels good. I have been working out a little (which, if you know me, is unheard of.) But compared to the fact that I have been diligently working on making myself a website, working out is really nothing! I haven't gotten far, and I have to say, the hardest part of it is making the decisions of what I want to feature on it. I will absolutely let everyone know when it is finished, but for now, just a taste....

Slightly lame. Yet so wonderful. I spend each day wishing I had more time to make lovely things, but when I come home I end up spending all of my free time LOOKING at lovely things... Not quite what I had in mind.... In my search, I found some of the most perfect things though, they make for great inspiration! First of all, I want this lady's life. Dwell Studios is a company I have looked at quite a few times before, she just designs great bedding. She seems to have done well for herself....maybe she will take in an apprentice and pay me massive wages?!?! Doubtful. My favorite, you ask? This of course!

Moving on. I went to Craft Warehouse today....I didn't realize

a. I love this place

b. This place could be SO inspiring

c. This place could take all of your money

I found something there, I didn't buy it, but will be going back for it now that I know what I am going to do with it....Some sort of resin stuff... I believe it is what this person uses to make these super cute charms, tacks, earrings......etc.....

(familiar Petra? HERE is something you can do with all of that free time you have...)

NOW, I too, would like to make those things. Not only do I also have wonderful paper to put under the resin...I could probably make my own paper/images and use those... BRILLIANT!

We have been busy! But wonderful. Sophia is now officially hammering away at Kindergarten, all day, every day. Wow, that is a long day for a little tyke. On Tuesdays, she has ballet after school, so we are basically leaving the house at 7 and getting home around the same time in the evening, welcome to the real world! OUCH!

I have been really busy at work, which I absolutely love. To me that means that I have a lot of variety and the time flies by. After work projects are hard for me, but when I am at work, I like to be busy! On the side, I have recently talked to my second job and told them I will only be working one Saturday a month, this way I don't have to work 6 days a week every week, it's a little to draining for me. I miss my poor family!

In the personal life things are wonderful. I am going to be heading to my cousins wedding in a few weeks, my lovely sister-in-law and brother are having a baby soon, and there is a possibility that my grandparents are moving closer to me soon -- three wonderful and exciting things to look forward to! I went shopping for that soon to be new niece today and realized that I really need a new baby, if for no other reason than to buy baby clothes, such cute stuff out there!

Our outside yard and gardening is really coming along this year. Usually, I try to plant a garden, but don't end up with much reward, this year, I haven't yet eaten a tomato from my garden, but there are a lot of green ones in there! Hopefully the sun will make a few more appearances and redden them up. I have been giving tons of zucchini away, I am so grateful to have something growing, yet, someone should've told me not to plant it in my garden box with anything else, it really knows how to take over! My other fruitful plant has been my green beans, those have been just right! Sophia eats them up and says she's "getting healthy", which of course, I LOVE! Here are a few images of the garden and our little area right out the front door!

4 a.m. and blogging

It has been a LONG time since I last posted. I have been pretty busy and I suppose that is somewhat of a good thing. I have been working a lot, and am just not used to this whole 8-5 life! But, I must say, I am getting more comfortable in it and actually really like my job, I just hope I can keep it. My job now is an internship and is supposed to end on September 5th, there is paperwork in the process of approval for me to stay longer, however, but as all large companies go, it is taking FOREVER. So, I have been just patiently waiting to see if I will have a job as of September 6th.

This internship has done so much for me, I have been exposed to so many new things that, as a designer, I should know. I was able to attend a photo shoot and a press check. I understand the corporate world so much more now, and to top it all off, I have met some wonderful people. They are so helpful and understanding, always willing to help, yet they totally trust me and have confidence in me that I don't even think I have. It has been a great experience either way.

On another note, Sophia is 5, and she starts Kindergarten on Friday. YIKES! She is very excited to start in a big school. She will still attend an immersion Chinuk school, but she will go to the public school in the morning and attend the immersion school in the afternoon. Her school offers all day, five days a week Kindergarten, so she would be going that often either way. This way she just gets to keep her language aspect. I am so proud of her. Wow.

Well, since I haven't had much for design postings, I decided to share a couple of things I have worked on recently. In earlier posts, I shared some business logos and postcards for my sisters pilates biz, well, since my sister is a genius, she also has another business going which is business consulting... Here is what I have worked up so far...nothing is final, nothing is concrete, just some ideas I sent her way..

As much as I want to put just the logo on here, this blogger won't let me (does anyone know why this happens sometimes?) ....so the logo is obvious in the photos below, it is the red circle with the ag in it. .....

Now that I have a "real" job, I spend so much time working that I have lost all time and motivation to do design and art for me. I want to get back into this, I need to be printing and drawing, taking photos and checking up on design news, even though I do it everyday at work, there is something different about doing design for work and doing design for me. Well, it has been awhile, I just haven't had it in me. I have been working six days a week, and surprisingly, I kind of like it. It is hard, and a little exhausting, but I have definitely found the good that comes out of it. The number one benefit of being super busy is the appreciation of free time. I have found that the time I have, I enjoy so much more. I play more with Sophia and, to be honest am SO much nicer. Being out of school, I have found that I don't have to feel guilty for free time, I always did before because there is always something to be studying or working on when you are in school. Not anymore!! YAY!

I really enjoy my job, and will enjoy it even more when I start getting paid for it, I hope it turns into a full time thing, kind of. Right now I am interning, and it lasts until September. I hope it becomes a job, because I could use the security, pay and benefits of a full time job for a couple of years. There is a little part of me that wants so badly to do freelance, so if I can get that up and going while working full time, maybe in the next years that will happen too.

It is so nice to be able to spend some time with Sophia, I feel like the time is slipping by too quickly. She is turning five in the next couple of weeks and will be in full time Kindergarten before I know it. Amazing to watch her grow, yet heartbreaking at the same time. WOW.

One other thing that is WONDERFUL right now is that my garden is taking over. Travis built me a little garden box, and I have absolutely maxed it out. I planted zucchini in it and maybe they should have gotten their own space, they are HUGE. Yet not yet fruitful... soon enough.

I have been feeling grateful, yet, I have a lot to be grateful for:

Less than 24 hours until I never REALLY need to go to Western Oregon University again. Done. Graduated. Period.

Less than 46 hours until I board to plane to New York. So freakin' excited, I don't know what to do with my spare time, because I only want to sit and think about NY, and research things to do, and look for places to shop, etc....

By the way, this is one of the coolest features of Google ever!

Well, I think today's post will be all about Sophia! Why? Because we love her SO much!

anxiety + excitement = me

Well, I believe the countdown is at 17 days. As of June 13th, I will have a bachelor's degree (hopefully), and will be on an airplane to New York. My anxiety has gotten SO crazy, I feel like a freight train about to slam into a brick wall. WOOOOO-HOOOOOO! Here we go! I have already began planning all of these wonderful things that I want to do after graduation, for some reason, I think I am going to be swimming in free time...hmmm. I think I have a rude awakening coming. However, in an ideal world, my after graduation days would look something like this.......

M-Thurs, go to work (already this is probably not true), be home by 5pm, tidy the house cook dinner.
Friday, spend the day in my studio out in the garage, making prints. (we don't have a studio, BUT WE WILL!)
Saturday, Go to my retail job in McMinnville and be surrounded by lovely things and people that love to shop....
Sunday, whatever I want....relax, clean, print, design, ahhhh

Now, since I can't really plan that way, because it is not realistic, I have decided the better way to go about this is to prioritize the free time that I do have. SO, my plans are as follows:

1. freelance design when work is available and time allows.
2. Create an Etsy account, I think I have one, but I would actually like to use it and sell wonderful creations, which leads to my next priority:
3. make some wonderful creations.
4. buy a hosting site and create an actually good website for myself.
5. Tend to my blog more often and try to post if not daily (M-F), then weekly.
6. sew more

I don't know, I think I can do it all....I just need a little more time........

I have the end in sight, graduation is right around the corner...I have TOTALLY lost all motivation. Does this happen to everyone at this point? I suppose from the last post, I have made progress, I finished the screen print I was contemplating. It ended up a bike, Maybe I will post it on the next post, I don't have an image of it as of now. I DO however, have an official website. I also sold a print for the first time ever! YAY.

Well, that now belongs to the Monmouth Independence Community Arts Association. YAY! I am sad to see it go, yet this is the life of an artist, I either need to learn this lesson, or change careers!

I also designed this postcard/poster set for the student juried art show, (which I have two pieces accepted into)

"Bugs" is in the student art show, as is my favorite print, "War is Murder"

Well, I am to be doing sketches for screenprints, yet have no ideas....I started researching and browsing, hoping something would jump out, and of course, found some GREAT things...

First idea...Alphabet poster. I think this would be a good combination for a graphic designer/printmaker, it makes sense.

Screenprinting. I was so stressed prior to the day, but actually ended up really enjoying myself and having a great day. I came home feeling so accomplished, it was great.

I have been blog searching like crazy, it has become one of my favorite ways to pass the time (way too much time). I hope one day I can have one of these design blogs that I love to look at so much, oooh, what fun that would be. I just though I would link a few more blog sites that I enjoy checking out, and new ones that I have found.

Rebeca Mendez is an artist that I have highlighted before, yet, I didn't highlight her correctly. In an earlier post, I put a picture of a wine label I designed (Lush wine), this label was based on Rebeca Mendez's design, SO, I think I should link her website here.

Rebeca has one project in particular, that I love, here is the description:
Here Over There is a photographic series that began on the island of Chiloe, Chile, on December 23, 2002 and continues to this date. I photograph the beds I sleep on during my travels with consistent parameters—the image is taken as soon as I awake, on the first morning of my stay, with the available light, with a hand held camera, and from the same point of view. The idea of my hotel beds came from the thought that I might never sleep in this bed again, and most likely I will never even remember this intimate moment of full surrendering.

For some reason, I just love this! Some of her photos are beautiful, and they give you a view into such a personal situation.

Secondly, I just came across a blog that I fell in love with. I like blogs that are not only design-based, yet a little bit personal, maybe I am just nosey, but I like to know of people's lives. I have been slacking. Well, here's the catch-up, the term is FLYING by, I can't even believe it. I am SO excited, yet, scared. Does graduation mean I have to get a real job? Does that mean I can no longer just float on by and have someone tell me what to do each day, I actually have to self-motivate...AAAAAHHHHH! That is scary. So, I suppose I will just shoot back into reality and the next thing you know, I will be going to my 9-5 each day.

In other news....I went back to Nectar today. It was great, I missed it. (if you are not familiar, this is where I go to apprentice) I haven't been for awhile due to my schedule not really fitting with theirs, but we figured it out. I was just there for about 3 hours, but it was fun to be back.

I have also been focusing on trying to get a portfolio together, it is fun. Getting all of my artwork together and looking at it as a cohesive whole is amazing. Just putting it all in one room and photographing it has really built confidence. I actually feel as though there is a theme behind it, which I didn't see before, so that is nice. I will have my official "senior show" here soon, May 9th, so I have got to get it all together and ready to be hung....That is also scary. But should be fun.
As soon as I have a web link for a portfolio, (which will be soon due to assignments), I will put it on here for all to see.

Oh, and one last thing, How About Orange had these coasters on her post today, if any of you ever want to buy me a gift, I LOVE these!

I have once again been trying to successfully create pattern. Mainly for prints, yet a little for other reasons....I just love pattern. Here area a few I'm working with now, maybe you will recognize the blue floral pattern from a previous post:

It must be the week of postcards, that is pretty much all that I have been designing this week. One for my sister's pilates business and one for the student juried art show at school. Here is what I have for each so far...

new inspiration

With the new term and new projects swamping me down already, I have come across such wonderful inspiration. My goal for printmaking class this term is to continue on my pattern theme. I just am madly in love with fabric and wallpaper prints, and found so much wonderful inspiration from so many sites this week. Here are just a few!

I found so many other great patterns as well, unfortunately, I am not organized enough to save them as to where they were found online, so I will probably never find them again...At least I learned this lesson for next time. Well, I have officially ended my vacation and am back for my final term. Exciting, but SO scary! I feel like this will be a crucial term though, with this term, I will create a portfolio, have 2 gallery shows and do an oral presentation for all that want to come and see. What I won't do is walk for graduation. I will be busy celebrating my freedom amongst the streets of New York. But, the party will come, along with my return from New York, and it will be a grand celebration.

I have so many things that I would like to share today, but, as of now, the time doesn't permit, and I will return later.....maybe.
